Kelli Hammerl

Kelli Hammerl began her career with EBSA in 2001 as an Investigator with the Chicago Regional Office. She was promoted to Senior Investigator in 2004, Supervisory Investigator in 2012, Deputy Regional Director in 2019, and Regional Director in 2026. While at EBSA, Ms. Hammerl has worked, supervised, and provided guidance on a wide range of complex investigations, for which some achieved voluntary compliance, some resolved through litigation, and some involved extensive settlement or mediation. As Regional Director of the Chicago Regional Office, Ms. Hammerl oversees the Enforcement Division, comprised of civil and criminal investigations, and the Customer Service Division, comprised of education, outreach and compliance assistance to plan participants, outside stakeholders and the regulated community. During her career, Ms. Hammerl has received a Distinguished Career Service Award and six Secretary’s Exceptional Achievement Awards. Prior to EBSA, Ms. Hammerl worked as a litigation attorney for the Chicago Transit Authority. She earned a BA in English, with honors, from The Ohio State University and a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Toledo College of Law. She is admitted to the Illinois State Bar. Ms. Hammerl is the mother of two children in college and enjoys sailing Lake Michigan.
