Pdf Summary
The presentation argues that profitable growth in client accounting services (CAS) depends on three linked structures: capacity, cash flow, and contracts. Firms should add capacity before quality suffers, hire when utilization reaches a defined ceiling, and pace growth to demand. Cash flow is strengthened by collecting fixed monthly fees in advance, charging separately for onboarding, and building annual increases into agreements. Contracts should define scope, term, renewal, and how out-of-scope work and fee changes are handled.

Firms are encouraged to shift from asking whether work is billable to clarifying whether it belongs within the firm’s defined ownership. Controllership—such as closing, reporting, and financial infrastructure—can form the baseline, while each additional function should be specified in writing. Strategic and management decisions remain the client’s responsibility. Firms should review scope and pricing when workload or time rises, work repeatedly falls outside scope, or contracts renew.

Benchmark data show a major shift away from hourly billing: the share using it as the primary method fell from 53% in 2018 to 10% in 2024. Fixed fees are the leading pricing approach, and 71% of firms review pricing annually. The survey also reports median CAS revenue growth of 17%, a 50% median margin (55% among top performers), and a median monthly fee of $3,000.

Onboarding should be treated as a structured 90-day period, not just setup. Its deliverables include assessing capacity, documenting processes, establishing communications, introducing key people, calibrating cadence, and transferring knowledge. This documentation creates a baseline for future scope changes; 79% of firms charge a separate onboarding fee.

Three recommended actions: define ownership and rescoping triggers in engagement letters, price services according to the functions owned and include annual increases, and govern onboarding through clear deliverables.
