Pdf Summary
This presentation reviews the U.S. and Illinois economic outlook for finance professionals. The economy is growing, but unevenly: GDP rose 2.1% in Q1 2025 and 1.5% in Q2, with expectations around 2% into 2026–2027. Consumer spending remains solid, especially in healthcare, while business investment is being driven by data centers. However, imports, tariffs, and a trade deficit are dragging on growth. The Federal Reserve recently raised rates 25 basis points in response to oil shock and tariff-related inflation.

Inflation remains persistent, with CPI up 3.4% year over year and gasoline and fuel prices sharply higher. The labor market is stable and healthy overall, with low layoffs, low unemployment, and continued job growth, but hiring is shifting toward specialized skills. Wages are rising modestly, and future job growth is expected mainly in healthcare, social services, and technology.

The presentation highlights growing income inequality, though recent data suggest wage gaps between lower- and higher-income households may be narrowing somewhat. Consumer sentiment has weakened due to fuel prices, inflation, and trade tensions.

Globally, uncertainty is being driven by the Iran conflict, oil supply disruptions, and tariff concerns. In Illinois, financial services and manufacturing remain strengths, and the state is pursuing future-oriented sectors like AI, quantum computing, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. Still, Illinois faces major challenges: high unemployment, slow population growth, a severe pension crisis, high taxes, and educational weaknesses.

For finance and accounting firms, the biggest opportunities are in automation, AI adoption, data analytics, niche specialization, contract/fractional hiring, and talent development. The key message: the economy and labor market are resilient, but the benefits are not reaching everyone, and succession planning and upskilling are urgent priorities.
