Pdf Summary
The Walt Disney Company’s fiscal 2023 Annual Report shows a company with strong revenue growth but pressure on profitability. Total revenues rose 7% to $88.9 billion, driven mainly by higher theme park attendance and spending, growth in streaming subscriptions, and stronger theatrical results. However, net income attributable to Disney fell 25% to $2.4 billion, and diluted EPS declined to $1.29, largely because of $3.9 billion in restructuring and impairment charges, including about $2.6 billion tied to content impairments and $0.7 billion in goodwill write-downs.

Disney operates in three segments: Entertainment, Sports, and Experiences. Experiences was the strongest performer, with operating income rising 23% to $9.0 billion as parks, resorts, and cruises recovered further from pandemic-era weakness. Entertainment operating income fell 32% to $1.4 billion, reflecting weaker linear network advertising and affiliate revenue and higher streaming/content costs. Sports operating income declined 9% to $2.5 billion, with lower advertising and affiliate revenue partly offset by higher subscription revenue. Disney’s direct-to-consumer services continued to grow subscribers, but still generated operating losses.

The company ended fiscal 2023 with $14.2 billion in cash, $46.4 billion in borrowings, and $206.0 billion in total assets. Cash from operations improved to $9.9 billion. Disney also announced major upcoming obligations and strategic developments, including NBCUniversal’s exercise of its Hulu put right, meaning Disney must buy NBCU’s Hulu stake. The report also highlights significant risks: economic weakness, changing consumer preferences, competition, technology shifts, regulatory pressure, labor disputes, cybersecurity threats, and the profitability challenge of streaming.

Overall, Disney’s parks and experiences business remained the key earnings driver, while the media and streaming businesses faced restructuring, content write-downs, and ongoing competitive and strategic challenges.
